In the last few weeks, we have been heavy on how COVID-19 and Contact Tracing could forever change our privacy and its relationship with modern technology.
This is not something to take lightly, as Government-mandated tracking is a scary thought for us and many other folks.
What if you found out that the application you downloaded to help get your morning coffee was also tracking you? Check out this recent finding that Tim Horton's was tracking each of their users every few minutes to see if they were visiting competitors.
The company was found to have set up their application to check users' locations every 3-5 minutes, with or without the application being open. As this data was aggregated, it was sent to an American company that logged users' home, workplace, and whether they were visiting a competitor.
The company claimed that location data was used for directions from a customer's current location to a Tim Horton's location and that any other data was used to target them with ads.
It has been noted that while some users' may have "allowed" location use, they would have never expected a company to actively aggregate and log personal data.
We hear about companies using our data all the time, but putting a face to the name makes it that much more real.
It begs the question, What are our Applications doing in the background of our phones? If an app that helps us get coffee easier is actively doing this, then we should all be worried.
Step 1: Go into your settings and see what applications are allowed to use your location data. This may be shocking to you. Change this immediately to not at all, or while you are using the app.
Step 2: Adopt a Faraday Sleeve. Protects your location at all times from COVID-19 Contact Tracing Applications, Any malicious Application, and your Mother.
