It was recently found that the AntiVirus company Avast, is taking all of your data and profiting from it. They market themselves as a "Free" antivirus software and is hence used by millions of people around the world. Not wanting to infringe on their own "free" software, they have created a secondary company called Jumpshot that tracks your data while it is installed on your computer.
The data in question ranges from your searches on Google and Google Maps, to who you're looking at on LinkedIn, and what you are watching on YouTube. Jumpshot's website says they are able to deliver data that is behind the internet's most valuable walled gardens, AKA the users of their AntiVirus software.
Since the findings, Avast has released a statement that since July of last year, that all new downloads of their AntiVirus software have the chance to Opt-In or Out of Jumpshot and that they are prompting existing users to Opt-In or Out. Avast also claims that your data that they are sharing is used to "create a de-identified data set that is provided to Jumpshot to build trend analytics products and services."
Regardless, most users of an AntiVirus software expect the company to have their best interest and were not aware that their data was being packaged to sell to others.
We recommend uninstalling Avast immediately if you have it installed on your computer.
Avast has come out and said that they are shutting down Jumpshot after this has come to light.
