The New Face of Car Thefts

car theft prevention

Car theft has begun to see a new method that is increasing as thieves have become more and more technical. Hammers, pry bars, the "hope and pray" and wires have gone out the window in 2018. There have been increasing number of key fob thefts as more and more car manufacturers use technologies that unlock and start cars just through proximity.

The key fob that you and (almost) everyone around you uses sends out a signal that is ever present. While some may think this signal just goes out when pressing a button, you would be wrong. This signal, while it may be weak, hence why you can only start your car while sitting inside of it, has the potential to be hijacked. The thieves with this in mind use technology to amplify the signal that is put out by the fob and then capture it. Once captured they are able to send this signal to your car and unlock it and then steal it as your car does not know the difference.

So what can you do?

In order to block this signal, one must put their fob in a Faraday Cage. This can be done with a metal can such as a coffee tin, or to wrap it in tin foil. We at Silent Pocket have addressed this issue and created thekey fob cover. The Key Fob Guard is a sleeve for your keys that blocks all signals to and from your keys through a small, flexible and durable Patented Faraday cage. The key fob protector is made of waterproof nylon with proprietary shielding material. This Key Fob Guard is discrete, low profile, and you can easily get your key in and out of the sleeve. We offer this guard in a variety of colors including olive, black, purple, red, and at a customer friendly price point. Our goal is to protect your privacy and security as well as still being able to enjoy the convenience of technology.
