Concealed Carry in Wyoming (WY) – Overview

Summary

  • Permit required? No for most adults. Wyoming allows permitless concealed carry for eligible U.S. residents; permits are optional for reciprocity/travel.

  • Minimum age: 21 for standard permit eligibility and typical permitless concealed carry; 18–20 may qualify for a permit in limited circumstances with a sheriff recommendation.

  • Duty to inform: No general duty to proactively inform; permit holders must show permit + ID if an officer requests it.

  • Where you can/can’t carry: Many prior “gun-free zone” restrictions were loosened (effective July 1, 2025), but key prohibitions still include courtrooms, detention facilities/jails, certain law-enforcement facilities (without consent), and bar-only areas; federal restrictions still apply.

  • Out-of-state permits: Wyoming honors permits from reciprocating states (and publishes a reciprocity list).

Wyoming is a permitless/constitutional carry state for concealed carry for eligible people, but it still offers a state concealed firearm permit that can be useful for reciprocity when traveling. Permits are issued through the Wyoming Attorney General’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) with local sheriffs involved in the application process, and the permit is valid statewide.

Wyoming’s legal landscape for “where you can carry” changed significantly with the Wyoming Repeal Gun Free Zones Act (HB0172), effective July 1, 2025. In general, people lawfully carrying under Wyoming law may carry concealed in additional public places (including certain public meetings/buildings and some airport areas not restricted by federal law), while specific sensitive locations and federal restrictions still control.

For residents and visitors, practical considerations often come down to property rules and safe handling/storage. If you’re transporting a firearm in a vehicle, staying in hotels, or moving through shared spaces, use secure storage (locked container/lockbox as appropriate), and consider keeping related items (like electronic access devices, key cards, or other sensitive electronics) in Faraday-protected SLNT bags for privacy and signal protection, especially when you’re minimizing exposure in vehicles, hotel rooms, or other shared environments.
