5 Reasons Why You Should Care About Your Privacy

1. Privacy is a human right.
First and foremost, privacy is a fundamental human right. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone is entitled to 30 basic human rights that include the rights to equality, religion, privacy, justice, and freedom. In Article 12 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, it clearly states that everyone is entitled the right to privacy. This article not only protects against unwanted surveillance, but also protects against tarnishing individual’s honor and reputations. Privacy is not an option, it’s a right.
2. Private Information Is Supposed To Be…Private!
Yes, we know you have nothing to hide, but that doesn’t mean there are certain personal information revealed about you. You keep a password on every device and account you have. Why? Because you don’t want people to access your text messages, email accounts, call log, social media accounts, and more. Just because you have nothing to hide, doesn’t mean you should forfeit your rights to privacy or let people/corporations snoop into your private life.
3. Your Information Can Fall Into The Wrong Hands
Big corporations have fallen victim to data breaches which leave us consumers exposed. We put a big amount of trust into corporations like Google, Facebook, Venmo, Target and many other businesses with our financial and personal information. If these companies become victim to a data breach, it leaves the consumers vulnerable and having to deal with the long-term problems of identity theft and black mail. In 2013, Target had a data breach and over 40 million customers credit cards and debit cards were stolen. The settlement wasn’t reached until 2017. As you can see, it’s a long process to receive compensation back from the corporation. Every company you give your financial information to puts you at risk. It is always important to be conscious and aware of the information you provide to businesses.
4. Third Party Companies Are Profiting Off Your Data
If you still don’t think privacy is important, then why are third party companies profiting off your data? Third party companies are collecting and selling your data to different marketing and data companies. Your data has value and you should be compensated accordingly for it such as using companies’ free services. For example, let’s say you have a Gmail account. The email is free and using Google's other applications like Google Doc, Google Spreadsheets, and Google Drive is also free, but in return they will collect and sell data from your personal information you provided and other data accessible on Google.
5. It’s No One’s Business But Your Own!
The definition of privacy is “the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people.” Your online privacy is a right and you should have the right for no one to track what you search or do on the internet. Surveillance is rapidly changing as technology is increasing. We need to understand and acknowledge that we are entitled to our rights to privacy and should not have data collected unless we consent to it.
